Mount Athos, a mountainous ridge peninsula at Northern region of Greece. Mount Athos is a World Heritage Site is standing with pride, officially named as ‘Monastic State of Holy Mountain’. It is home to around 20 or 30 Orthodox Monasteries. The Mount is also referred to as the Holy Mountain. The Mount has been inhabited since ancient times by Christian with long monastic traditions dating from 800AD.

The history of Athos dates from birth of the Christian religion. The great Mount Athos is 2033meters which was mentioned as Aiskhylos and Homer as the first Home of Greek God Apollo and God Zeus. They lived at this very place, before they moved to Mt Olympus.
According to the Legends, told by the Monks of Athonite Monasteries, the history of Mount Athos strted with Virgin May. In 49th AD, Mary sailed to the Island Cyprus to visit her friend, Lazurus. On her journey a huge storm disturbed Mary’s ship, the ship was then landed on a protected bay on the eastern coast of Athos. . The coast was surrounded by beautiful forest and towering mountain. Mary then declared, ‘this mountain is holy ground, and now is my portion’. The spot Anchorage her boat is the present day of the Monastery of Iveron.
The moment when Mary steeped on the land, great sound of crashing across the peninsula roused, crashing all idols and pagan statues to the ground. An interesting note to consider, this incident is also documented as Earthquake which had occurred in 49th AD in Northern Greece. Hence, as per the Legends, Mary baptized the recluses and began to glorify Christian History.
Mount Athos After A Period
In 1054, it becomes an Orthodox Spiritual centre. Since Byzantine times, Mount Athos also enjoyed autonomous statute. The Holy Mountain was forbidden to women & children, which was recognised as artistic site. The site was once influenced by afield Russia, also its painting which was influenced by history Orthodox Art.
The period when Mount Athos was transformed to sacred place is still noted in history. The Monasteries are also masterpiece holding great wall paintings, works of Manuel Panselinos & Frangos Catellanos. Today, Holy Mount Athos is governed by the Greek state. It is divided by 20-self-governed by territories. While, each of territory consists of some monastic establishments and cardinals monastery. Each monasteries are communes, which also has housing, prayers, and so.
The Mount is located in eastern and most wonderful, beautiful peninsula of Halkidiki, which is also called the peninsula of Athos. The place in Greece, which is entirely dedicated to the worship of God and prayers. Hence the land is also called as ‘Holy Mount’. The Holy Mount spread over 50km in length and 8-12Km wide covering over 350-km.
