Ooty Trip – Things To See In Ooty
It has been a month since I am back from Ooty and I am still recovering from the vacation mode. It was our Anniversary so we thought of celebrating it at Ooty this year. I had a misconception about Ooty to be a typical commercial hill station. I must say Google results amazed me. There are a plenty of lovely places which were child-friendly too. Before starting with the packing always check for the weather report for that specific place, this will help you to pack your clothes as per the season and need.
How to Get there
The best way to go to Ooty is from Bangalore. You can get a lot of flights options to reach Bangalore and then you can hire a car to drive up to Ooty from Bangalore. The drive is for 6 hours. You can also choose a bus route from Bangalore to Ooty. Those with motion sickness may find the hill journey to be tough, you can keep a sick bag handy.
If you are traveling with kids always carry an extra set of clothes for the little one. If you want to eat before starting you can have lunch at Annapurna restaurant. They will provide you with South Indian Thali options and other similar South Indian dishes like sambar, idli, rasam etc. It is a pure vegetarian hotel.
We visited during the month of May since it was hot at Bangalore, we enjoyed the hilly ride to Ooty. As we were close to our destination we could feel the cool breeze and lovely smell of nature.
Things to see around Ooty
- Pykara Boat Club
It is a great place for boating, my son enjoyed the entire ride, we could see few cranes and Bisons during the boat ride.
- Mudumalai National Park
Due to the hot weather, there were fewer animals, but we saw few deer, elephants, and monkeys on the way. My toddler was very happy to see wildlife in true life instead of his story books.
- Botanical Garden
The botanical garden is the best place for the kids. There is ample of space to run around and play which kids usually don’t find in busy city. Kids will totally love the beautiful lush greenery. It’s best for small picnics too. A horticulture department shop is inside the botanical garden, you can purchase seeds of plants.
- Thread Garden
It is a man-made garden with skillful artists, it exhibits exquisite collection of artificial flowers and plants. It is a treat to eyes.
Things to Carry while travelling with Kids
- Extra pairs of warm clothes. The weather keeps changing from sunny to rainy. The temperature drops to 16-18 degree Celsius after 6 pm.
- Carry hats and sunglasses, must needed during daytime.
- Baby Lotion and good baby oils as climate can make their skin very dry.
- Umbrella and rain coat.
- Diapers, first aid box and important medicines.
- Homemade nutritious snacks like Sathu Maavu cookies or nuts trail mix.
Shopping for Moms
I actually wanted to shop homemade chocolates and herbal beauty and hair oils. I ended up
shopping fresh carrots, beetroots, broccoli, plums and brussels sprouts which I happily carried
back to Bangalore!
