The splendid salt marshland called ‘Rann of Kutch’, located in the Westernmost part of the world’s most vibrant country- India, gets draped into the colors of the festivity as three- months long celebration of ‘Rann Utsav’ gets into its full swing! The iconic ‘Rann of Kutch’ is situated amidst the Thar Desert in the Indian state of ‘Gujrat’!
The ‘Rann Utsav’ is organized every year in order to exhibit the cultural opulence of the ‘Kutch’ region. The region surrounding the Rann is renowned for excellent handicrafts, rich folk music, unadulterated dance-forms & gourmet cuisines, which sum up the vibrant culture of Gujrat! The celebration lets the attendees to enjoy the vivacious culture of the Kutch region amidst the unique, stark-white backdrop of the salt marshland that shimmers with all its might on the gleaming full moon nights!
How it was Started?
The ‘Rann Utsav’ is the brainchild of the Ministry of Tourism of the state of ‘Gujrat’ & it caters towards introducing the cultural heritage of the Kutch region to the rest of the world! The ‘Rann of Kutch’ is known as one of the largest salt deserts in the world & it occupies nearly 7,505 sq.Km of the area. The ‘Great Rann of Kutch’, the ‘Little Rann of Kutch’ & the ‘Banni Grasslands’ are famous for its iconic white-colored salty sands. On the full moon nights, the moonlit white sands look sensational. The beaming white sand & soothing, cool nights set up a tone for the celebration, which consists of the folk-music & dance performances by the local artists.
How is it Celebrated?
Throughout the festive season, the arid land of Kutch floods with the tourists who come here to witness the glory of the Kutchi culture! The indigenous people of the Kutch region are known for their phenomenal craftsmanship. This region is known as the cradle of numerous types of handicrafts, the knowledge of which, has preserved & transferred from one generation to the next. Their skills with weaving different types of embroidery & ethnic apparels are just amazing. The Kutchi people are also known for their skills in Hand-Block Printing, Wood Carvings, Wall Paintings & producing highly ornate artifacts such as decorated penknives & nutcrackers. Their skills with producing fabulous little toys & showpieces from the seashells are simply phenomenal.
